‘The Vampire Diaries’ Cast: Where Are They Now?

It’s been five years since the finale of The Vampire Diaries aired on the CW. During its eight seasons on television, the show introduced fans to a diverse range of characters, as well as their performers. It was the big break for several of the actors into the world of film and television, while others had already established a name for themselves.

After The Vampire Diaries ended, many of the cast continued pursuing their cinematic careers, while others took a pause to focus on their side projects. So, what happened to them? What initiatives have they taken on over the last five years? Here is a complete list of recent The Vampire Diaries cast’s film productions.

Nina Dobrev – Elena Gilbert

Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), the protagonist of The Vampire Diaries, had a difficult time since the beginning of the series. Elena met and ended up in a love triangle with the vampire brothers, Damon and Stefan Salvatore after her parents perished in a car accident, which played out throughout the course of the series.

After season six, Dobrev left the show but returned for the series finale in 2017. Following that, she starred in the 2017 remake of Flatliners alongside Elliot Page and featured in Run This Town, and Lucky Day. Additionally, she was also featured on the CBS sitcom Fam, which was canceled after only one season. Dobrev most recently appeared in the Netflix rom-com Love Hard, in which she played an unlucky girl in love with Jimmy O. Yang (Crazy Rich Asians). She’ll soon be seen in the Netflix comedy The Out-Laws, which is now in post-production.

Paul Wesley – Stefan Salvatore

Paul Wesley portrays Stefan, the brooding vampire, and younger Salvatore. Stefan is depicted as a Golden Boy because of his high morale, compassion, generosity, and nobility, which contrasts with his brother. He does, however, have a dark alter ego known as “The Ripper.”

In addition to television, Wesley performed in plays such as Zurich, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and Cal in Camo with Stranger Things star, David Harbour. Moreover, Wesley also starred in Tell Me a Story, a show that took famous fairy tales and gave them a grim spin which was canceled after two seasons. Flowers in the Attic: The Origin, which will be released in July, is where fans will see Wesley next.

Ian Somerhalder – Damon Salvatore

Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is the typical reckless and brutal adversary in the first season of The Vampire Diaries, doing anything he wanted with no concern for the repercussions. Fans eventually warm up to him because Damon’s character development is one of the best in the series.

After The Vampire Diaries ended, Somerhalder starred as Dr. Luther Swann in V Wars, another vampire-centric Netflix series that is canceled after only one season. Since then, Somerhalder has appeared to have abandoned his acting profession in favor of focusing on his bourbon business with his TV brother, Paul Wesley. Brother’s Bond Bourbon was launched early last year.

Kat Graham – Bonnie Bennett

Bonnie Bennett, played by Kat Graham, was the first witch introduced in the series, and she was Elena’s best friend. In later seasons, she often acted as a mediator between humans and otherworldly beings (particularly those living on the Other Side).

After The Vampire Diaries, Graham diligently engages in feature films such as Emperor, Cut Throat City, and Operation Christmas Drop, in addition to her prospective music career. In addition, she also voiced Rhythm in the Trolls: TrollsTopia TV series. Fans will soon get another chance to see Graham in Love in the Villa and Collide, both of which are currently in post-production.

Candice King – Caroline Forbes

Caroline, portrayed by Candice King, is Elena and Bonnie’s best friend, who transitioned from being a human cheerleader to a vampire perfectionist. Caroline later married Stefan and became a surrogate mother to Alaric’s (Matthew Davis) twin daughters.

King later appeared in The Originals, a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries that focused on Klaus Mikaelson and his Original family, reprising her role as Caroline. King also guest-starred in a few television shows, including The J&T Sketch Show and The Orville. She is most recently seen in After We Collided and Christmas in Tune.

Zach Roerig – Matt Donovan

Matt, who is played by Zach Roerig, was Elena’s first boyfriend in high school. Matt is the only character who has remained human throughout the series, displaying admirable loyalty and kindness. Later, he rose up the ranks to become the sheriff of Mystic Falls.

After the show ended in 2017, Roerig reprised his character as Matt in The Vampire Diaries spin-off Legacies. He also portrayed Pulse on Fox’s The Gifted and appeared as a guest star on CBS’ God Friended Me. Roerig was also seen in Dare Me, a USA Network program based on a book by Megan Abbott, and most recently starred in a TV movie called A Christmas to Savour.

Michael Trevino – Tyler Lockwood

Tyler Lockwood, Matt’s werewolf best friend, and Caroline’s first love, was played by Michael Trevino. Tyler is a troubled yet sweet and honest young guy who subsequently became Klaus Mikaelson’s (Joseph Morgan) first hybrid, a supernatural creature created by crossing two or more different species.

Trevino, like Dobrev, departed the show at the end of season six but returned later. After The Vampire Diaries, Trevino appeared in a few TV shows as a guest star, including Timberwood and The Breakup Diet. He most recently appeared in the CW’s Roswell, New Mexico as Kyle Valenti.

Steven R. McQueen – Jeremy Gilbert

Steven R. McQueen played Jeremy Gilbert, Elena’s troublesome younger brother, at the beginning of the series. Jeremy’s journey is challenging, leading him to become a vampire hunter despite the fact that most of his loved ones are vampires.

On The Vampire Diaries spin-off, Legacies, McQueen, like Roerig, reprised his role as Jeremy. In addition to appearing on Chicago P.D. and Chicago Fire, McQueen also appeared in the documentary Medal of Honor in 2018. He is most recently seen as Cal Breaker in The Warrant in 2020.

Matthew Davis – Alaric Saltzman

Alaric Saltzman, played by Matthew Davis, is a history teacher at Mystic Fall High School whose wife was wrongly accused of being murdered by Damon Salvatore. In his leisure time, Alaric was a vampire hunter, but he later became a father figure to the Gilbert children and Damon’s best friend.

Following The Vampire Diaries, Davis reprised his role as Saltzman but as the headmaster of The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted in the spin-off Legacies.
