Competition shows such as American Idol, Project Runway, or RuPaul’s Drag Race are still on the air after several seasons. Each season still brings new surprises and may outperform the previous seasons to show there are more talented, bright, and skilled participants out there. However, there are a few shows that add a twist on the classic competition show or game show by adding a list of challenges, while others completely introduce a new idea. These shows can be watched on Netflix even if they are not Netflix originals.

‘Flinch’ (2019)

Flinching is quickly moving away to avoid a harmful situation. Everyone flinches. It’s a natural reaction that is difficult to suppress this reaction because it often comes unexpectedly. The 2019 game show Flinch tested contestants by placing them in risky (but claimed to be safe) situations and seeing if they would budge.

These wild situations included a musician hitting crash cymbals behind the participants to strapping participants down as a rat scurried by their hand. If they moved even a muscle, they were faced with a consequence, whether it was a slap across their leg or a shock of electricity. Figuring out who is the winner in this game is tricky since the hosts have to back a contestant. As their contestant flinches, they gain points: the host with the most points will face these challenges themselves in the end. Flinch scored a 4.3 out of 10 on IMDb and is only on Netflix.

‘Floor Is Lava’ (2020 – )

The classic children’s game of the same name is what inspired the show Floor is Lava (2020 -). Everyone has probably played this game at least once as a kid, where players would pretend the floor is lava and jump across furniture or anything that was “floating” on the “lava.”

The Floor is Lava tests contestants’ endurance and stability as they navigate a course where the main objective is not to touch the floor. Kids used their imagination to create treacherous lava for the game, but on Floor is Lava, they use a liquid substance to imitate the molten rock. According to IMDb, Floor is Lava scored a 5.3 out of 10. The Floor is Lava is currently only on Netflix.

‘Bullsh*t The Game Show’ (2022 -)

Kate Hudson (as Andie Anderson) and Matthew McConaughey (as Benjamin Barry) played some variation of the game Bullsh*t in the romantic comedy How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days (2003). While their version relied on a calling out a bluff in a game of cards, Bullsh*t The Game Show focuses on answering a set of ten questions, but participants still have a chance at winning a million dollars even if they don’t know the question.

Whether the participants know the answer or not, they have to convince a least one judge or “challengers” of their reasoning as to why they chose that specific answer. The challengers have to determine whether the contestant was lying or telling the truth about their reasoning. If they believe the contestant is lying, they say “Bullsh*t.” If the challengers believe the contestant’s lie, the contestant continues to answer questions in hopes of winning one million dollars. According to IMDb, Bullsh*t The Game Show scored a 5.7 out of 10. Bullsh*t The Game Show is streaming only on Netflix.

‘Awake: The Million Dollar Game’ (2019)

Awake: The Million Dollar Game (2019) is a game show where participants will do everything to maintain their concentration after not sleeping for 24 hours. It sounds simple enough, but these participants will be tasked with completing simple to complex tasks that test their physical and mental capabilities.

What makes this game wilder is that to know whether the contestants truly stayed awake for 24 hours, they are monitored in a windowless room and had to count quarters for 24 hours. According to IMDb, Awake: The Million Dollar Game scored a 5.9 out of 10. Awake: The Million Dollar Game is currently only streaming on Netflix.

‘The Chase’ (2013 — 2015)

Usually, in trivia games, everyone is on the same playing field. This means that they start at zero and compete to either eliminate each other or gain the most amount of points. The Chase works a little differently, where teams of three compete against Mark Labbett, named “the Beast,” who is a trivia expert. Each team member answers questions with each question $5,000 and then has to face off the Beast in a head-to-head challenge where they answer the same questions.

However, the participant and the Beast are on different parts of the board. Each question the participant or the Beast get right, they move down the board. If the participant answers a few wrong questions and The Beast “catches” them before the participant reaches the money, they are eliminated from the game. Season 3 and season 4 are the only two seasons available on Netflix. According to IMDb, The Chase scored a 6.3 out of 10.

‘The American Bible Challenge’ (2012 -)

There are trivia shows for are just every sort of topic or a combination of topics on TV, such as the interactive Trivia Crack that was added to Netflix in April 2022. The American Bible Challenge is a trivia show that focuses on one topic or rather one book: the Holy Bible. The American Bible Challenge is hosted by Jeff Foxworthy, and three teams compete against each other by answering questions related to the Bible.

Besides only featuring questions on the Bible, the team that wins the money, in the end, gets to donate it to their desired charity. The contestants that participate are church service workers and people who are committed to helping their community. According to IMDb, The American Bible Challenge scored a 6.4 out of 10. The American Bible Challenge is on Netflix and on Pluto TV.

‘Survivor’ (2000 —)

Since 2000, Survivor has been sending contestants to survive on a remote island to test whether they could survive on an island using only what they could forage for. They have to survive on the island for a few weeks (depending on the season). Only one contestant will win one million dollars, while all the other contestants will be voted off the island.

Each season brought a new island and new challenges. Survivor relied on contestants forming alliances and proving to each other that they were strong enough to survive the challenge. Survivor scored a 7.4 out of 10 on IMDb. There are currently only two seasons of Survivor on Netflix.
